Summer Vacation

Hello my friends,

Swede and I just spent the last week moving and now we are staying at various friends' homes during the month of June while he and I teach summer school.

Then, in July, we are free birds.

I suspect I will be spending some time in Michigan to try to heal my step-Dad who has been recovering from a very rare disease called Wegeners and hopefully making it to the Hart Family 4th of July Weekend.

Also, I will be rendezvousing with Swede in Utah for some caving and hiking in the Mountains and to visit his family there, and travelling the coast of California for awhile, visiting my wonderful friend, Ingrid.

So, the summer is here in the Valley of the Sun, and luckily, it will only be 97 today and tomorrow, before it jumps back up to 107!!! It's not too bad yet, though, because the pavement has not yet soaked up so much radiation that it doesn't cool down in the evenings.

By mid-June, we'll be in the hundies night and day:)

Thanks for visiting my blog.

I'm not sure when my next post will be.

Have a wonderful summer if I don't catch up with you:)

Love, Rachel

Rachel!
Why the move? Where are you moving to?

How exciting to have summer here now. We are enjoying temperatures in the upper 60s and 70s. And some of my coworkers were complaining it's too hot! Of course I ask them if they ever lived a summer in Phoenix.

Keep me posted on your travels, especially coastal plans. :) This is exciting that you are coming out! Yippee!

I wish you summer time relaxation, freedom, safe journeys in the meantime.

Love, Ingrid

Oh, Rachel, I HOPE TO GOD we DO see you in Michigan at the cottage over the 4th. Please remember that it's the weekend AFTER the 4th that the family is coming (not before). I even think your dad and Sandy are hoping to make it on Saturday the 7th. We will be there from the 4th to that Saturday evening. I sure hope we get to see you!

Aunt Ginnie, I hope that I get to see you, too! I'll be looking into flights today on the Internet.

Ingrid, In short the move is to save money and be free to travel without living expenses over the summer. I'll call you soon:)

Summer has become such a busy time for everyone, it seems.

Yes, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and Swede to come to Hukilau over the 4th celebration!!

If you can't make it then, or even if you can, PLEASE try to come to Farm Day August 11!

Hope you make it to the cottage Rachel. I am eager to see pictures of the big family gathering. And great oppertunity to get some tips from Ruth, specially composition and indoor photography.

Enjoy your summer Rachel. Please keep drinking a lot of water.
When you come back i want to discuss some unpleasant subject of
patenting yoga asanas and equipment. i am a little confused here, you know more about this subject.

Thanks for the invitation to Farm Day, Aunt Ruth- I really would love to go- but the timing is right when school starts again.

I am looking up flights right now:)

Rauf, will we be seeing you at the cottage or farm day?

Patenting asanas- yes, Yoga is indeed a business. I don't know if the actual asanas themselves are patented, but the order in which asanas are used definitely are. Iyengar yoga has a specific sequencing that I imagine is patented. Bikram is also patented- and they do the same sequence of asanas in a row.

There are no limits to using the asanas, as long as you don't call your practice "Bikram," without being a certified Bikram instructor... or "Iyengar" or "Anusara." The term "Hatha" is an umbrella term that any yoga instructor may use to describe their practice. Hatha is free, and that's why so many people say they do Hatha Yoga, or Flow, or Power, because no one has a patent on those terms.

Hopefully that was helpful:)

oh no Rachel, i don't even have a passport and have no desire to go abroad. It will take another two lifetimes to see India alone. I was hoping to see the entire Hart family pictures, i am familiar with most of them through pictures though.

I still fail to understand patenting practices which have existed for centuries in India, Neem leaf, a very common antiseptic, termeric for medicinal properties have been in use for thousands of years. Moghul rulers brought Basmati rice from Iran (persia then) more than 500 years ago. Patenting these items and practices does not make any sense to me. Simply ridiculous. These giant multinationals are cheating people, not just Indians but Americans as well.

Yes, here in Arizona, we can drive an hour and cross the border to Mexico and buy any drugs that we want over the counter- for pennies on the dollar compared to what it costs to fill a prescription in the States.

Of course, it is illegal, but I tell you what, I'd do it in a heartbeat if I need medicine.

On the radio the other day I heard someone was put in jail for doing this very thing- a little old man who couldn't afford his meds. The host of the AM radio show I listen to was saying that it's the people who created the situation where a man cannot even get his medicine without having to cross the border illegally who should be put in jail, not the little ol' man! I completely agree.
